Four Studes Awarded Project Grants
Posted by pcced 0 CommentsFour students from the College of Arts and Sciences were awarded grants to implement projects promoting citizenship in their communities in a project grant competition hosted by the Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy (PCCED) and Ortigas Foundation Inc.
Jose Mateo “Joey” Dela Cruz and Marikris “MK” De Guzman, representing the National Union of Students of the Philippines-National Capital Region Chapter (NUSP-NCR), in partnership with Wika ng Kultura at Agham Kabataan (WIKA Kabataan), bagged 2nd place which earned the project Php 50,000, while Johann Joseph “Jay” Del Rosario and Erika Bucog, representing Karatula won 3rd place, worth Php 30,000.
Dela Cruz and De Guzman’s project, “Pagbabago Now Na,” is a project aiming to form a youth agenda in 2010 through a series of discussions on the upcoming election.
“Pagbabago” will use leadership training seminars and alternative classroom learning experience (ACLE)-like intervention programs which at the end are expected to inculcate among the participants civic knowledge, civic skills and civic dispositions. As a culminating activity, there will be a youth summit where the students and youth will craft the Philippine Youth Agenda
The project also hopes to submit the results to the Office of the President.
Del Rosario and Bulog’s project, “Sining Eskuwela: Palihan sa Sining at Demokrasya,” on the other hand, aims to gather the youth not just to participate in the upcoming election but to convince the youth to join the continuing movement towards social development.
The primary strategy is the formation and activation of balangay, or chapters. The function of the chapters is to empower the youth with knowledge and awareness about social issues through use of arts and literary forms, so that they can take active role in social transformation.
“Sining Eskuwela” hopes to use the Internet to improve effectiveness of advocacy efforts among the youth, whom PCCED has observed to be apathetic with social issues.
